Color vs. B&W -- color, or texture and design

A couple shots from the fishing docks in Seattle. I really like the differing colors on the nets and lines and bouys, but I also like the way the patterns and textures show up when the color is gone. Two different looks, two different feels and interpretations.

Color and B&W:

The back of a giant philodendron leaf--the veining/ribbing in the leaf almost looks like the spokes on an umbrella.

I really like the almost abstract feel with this one, how much more you notice the subtle pattern in the leaf itself, and how 3-D the veins/ribbing become.

B&W and Color: barn

I like the play of soft complementary colors here, and the washed aged appearance of the barn.
I really like the way, once you see the B&W conversion, you notice the structure of the barn, and the open lattice on the roof, and the pattern of shadows inside the barn.

B&W and Color -- succulents

I love the different types of leaves that succulents have, and the differing shades of blue-greens and greens. But--when you convert them to B&W, the structure and the design/pattern shows up even more strongly.

Color and B&W: pleated rocks in Zion

This is from one of my trips to Zion National Park. I just felt that this cliff and solitary tree would be great candidates for a B&W treatment.

A final flare, and a glare

One last flare...
Spotted this osprey the other day, perched in a tree about 100' above me. Look at that fierce gaze!!

Just for fun I flipped this one.

Finally--a flare!!

Yesterday morning it was clear just long enough for me to catch (try to) an elusive sunflare. Within 15 minutes of this, clouds rolled in. The rain started last night...still going today, so I am glad I was able to grab this and be on theme!
